Citizens for Alternatives to Longview Power (CALP), a committee of the Mon Valley Clean Air Coalition (MVCAC) is a campaign involving community groups and individuals who believe that Morgantown and Monongalia County, West Virginia can do better, in terms of economic and community development, than the proposed Longview Power coal-fired electric plant. As part of the Mon Valley Clean Air Coalition (MVCAC), CALP supports smarter growth and development. CALP sees that the costs and hazards associated with Longview will far outweigh the likely benefits to Monongalia County and Morgantown, West Virginia. We believe the county’s economic, environmental and social health would be better served by other types of development. CALP’s mission is to educate the public about the full ramifications of the Longview project; to encourage citizens to speak out about it; and to promote alternative development activities that contribute positively to Mon County. In order to prevent grave damage to our children, our seniors and our community, and to keep the county attractive to development that improves our quality of life, CALP seeks to convince our elected officials that the people of Monongalia County do not support the Longview power plant and do not support politicians who do.
