LONGVIEW POWER EMISSIONS

Except for carbon dioxide, these numbers are from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection Division of Air Quality's final Air Permit / PSD Permit. A copy of Longview Power / GenPower, LLC’s Permit Application is on Longview's web site http://www.genpower.net/longview/environmental.html.

For those delving into the details of environmental permits and their implications, accessing primary documents like this can provide invaluable insight. Furthermore, when crafting essays or reports on environmental policies or regulatory compliance, seeking guidance from experts in academic writing services such as marvelous essays can ensure clarity and coherence in your work.

Carbon Dioxide*(CO2) 1,800,000+ tons per year*

Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)    3,215 tons per year

Carbon Monoxide    2,948 tons per year

Nitrogen Oxides (NOX)    2,142 tons per year

Particulate Matter (PM10)     482 tons per year
      (110 lbs/hour)

Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4)     201 tons per year

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)      107 tons per year
      (24.5 lbs per hour)

Total Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs)       up to 25 tons per year

Benzene (included in VOCs above)      1.5 tons per year
     (estimated in Longview's permit)

Lead      0.5 tons per year
     (1/10 lb per hour)

Mercury      0.06 tons per year
      (120 lbs per year)

Emissions Stack: approximately 550 feet tall; when placed on the hill, the elevation of the stack top will be approximately 900 feet above the Mon River level (approximately 1,700 feet above mean sea level).

* This CO2 emissions number is an estimate based on the calculation below. The air permit application does not require that GenPower / Longview Power estimate carbon dioxide emissions, even though many environmental scientists believe the biggest environmental concern facing the world at present is carbon dioxide and global climate change.

CO2 calculation:
(As indicated below, one can come up with estimates that range from 1.8 to 5.5 million tons of CO2 per year, depending on the source.)

kw x 3414 = Btu / hour (http://www.steamonline.com/formulas.html)

600,000 kilowatts x 3414 = 2.05 x 10E9 Btu / hour

(2.05 x 10E9 Btu / hour) x (24 hours/day) x (365 days/year) = 1.8 x 10E13 Btu / year

(208 pounds CO2 / million Btu) x (1.8 x 10E13 Btu / year) = 3.74 x 10E9 pounds CO2 / year (http://www.nrdc.org/air/energy/rbr/append.asp)

(3.74 x 10E9 pounds CO2 / year) x (1 ton / 2000 pounds) = 1.87 10E6 tons CO2 / year

Note, however that the following source results in CO2 emissions about 3 times greater than calculated above: http://www.seen.org/pages/db/method.shtml (2.09 (DOE) pounds of CO2 per kilowatt hour of operation)
